I have to admit it: I am a sucker for babies. Over this past weekend—Memorial Day—I went to visit some friends, and a newborn was in the house. I hadn’t planned on seeing the baby, so I was so surprised to get a glance at the tiny, squirming, cooing “bundle of joy.” It really was a treat to be near a person who is so innocent, adorable, and filled with the promise of tomorrow. Legendary poet Carl Sandburg was right when he mused: “A baby is God’s opinion that the world should go on.”

While I stood there, gazing down at little baby Abby, I realized one of the reasons why I love infants is because every experience is a new one for them. If you walked in on me studying my toes, or giggling at a sunbeam, I think my next place of residence would be a rubber room. But for babies, it is all brand-new, exciting, and thrilling. As a longtime collector and teddy bear observer, I get excited when I stumble upon a different design or a unique fabric choice. For a baby . . . every plush critter is a door swung open to enchantment.

One of the new lines of animals and soft toys that have babies and toddlers on its mind is Nat & Jules, an imprint of the Demdaco company http://www.demdaco.com/index.aspx. Demdaco is well known for its family-themed gifts and boutique specialty items. It’s a must-go destination for picture frames, sculptures, message-bearing plaques, and other decorative items that elevate the spirit and enhance the home. Quite a lofty and laudatory purpose!

The line of stuffed bears, kitties, pooches, owls, dinos, and jungle exotica are soft to the touch and are made of durable, high-quality fabric. They have been designed to add vibrancy and color to the nursery, as well as to provide a warm body for the little baby to snuggle and cuddle with.

After meeting Abby for the first time, I immediately made up my mind to become one of the first people to gift her with a stuffed friend. That’s one of the pleasures of being in the bear biz—many of my friends and family members know that when it comes to gifting the cute, cuddly toys, that’s my domain.

And luckily for me, I know there is a host of babies getting ready to giggle and wiggle their way through my future. Blame it on last fall’s blackout—or credit it to the hurricane that blasted its way through the East Coast—but lots of folks were home-bound . . . and are now parents or parents-to-be. This baby boom is quite evident in my social circle, which means that I am going to be bestowing lots of little, charming creations to even cuter, more charming babies.

My only worry now this summer is whether I should go with a first bear—which everyone expects from me—a first doll, ditto—or throw them off the track with a gentle, whimsical giraffe or an elegant, comely one. Either way, I know that there are lots of top-notch soft toy companies out there, and I’m pleased as punch to welcome Nat & Jules to the neighborhood!
